"Cabinet of Curious Poses" by Russell Maycumber is a special blend of two and three-dimensional elements into a still life of human forms, life, death, and nature. The title hints to the viewer an
eccentric collection of found items, inviting you to peer into a miniature
surrealist world at the edges, behind the pieces, and in the details.
Maycumber plays with the tension between the simplicity of line with the
physicality of these three-dimensional objects, informally grouping each piece to give viewers the same agency he had in creating them, encouraging personal engagement rather than guiding a set narrative.
In speaking with Maycumber, an integral aspect of his work is how he integrates sense and form to construct play and have fun with his art. It feeds into the satisfaction one gains from finding the perfect form that your mind finds the most pleasing, and what the senses find most arousing.
Maycumber’s work is inspired not only by the natural world but by an
anthropological lens on urban life—finding traces of the natural within the
metropolitan landscape, and beauty in what has been discarded by others. In
utilizing found or discarded objects, not only can he evade the risk of destroying costly materials, but he also gives what has been disregarded by society a second chance at having purpose.
